Getting the Most Out of Your Older Projector
Getting the Most Out of Your Older Projector
By Chuck Collins, VP Commercial AV at Digital Projection International
As the U.S. economy continues its sluggishness, no doubt we are all experiencing budget cuts in all facets of our lives. Now more than ever, it’s important to reign in unnecessary expenses. Yet, life goes on and somehow we must manage to make necessary purchases or get the most out of what we already have.
For instance, how do we go about getting another year’s use out of a projector that may be in desperate need of retirement? There are several ways to go about this but it all comes down to maximizing the Total Environmental Dynamic Range. What is Total Environmental Dynamic Range? It is the “real world contrast ratio” achieved in a given venue. Higher contrast ratio values produce more dynamic imagery.
Before you get too excited because your projectors’ contrast ratio is specified at 2,000:1, remember: contrast ratio is essentially the difference between black and white displayed on a screen. The higher the contrast ratio, the more perceived brightness and perceived resolution. However, ANY ambient light in a given venue will dramatically affect the Total Environmental Dynamic Range of a displayed image. In other words, just controlling the ambient light in your sanctuary can give your older projector a new lease on life.
If you are experiencing perceived brightness issues and installing black out shades in your sanctuary isn’t an option, one of the least expensive solutions is to reexamine the lighting array you are using on the stage. In fact, you could potentially save some money by simply analyzing your light output. Is all of the stage lighting necessary and serving an effective purpose? Or can some of the lights be re-aimed or turned off? Improperly aimed stage lightning can cast stray light on projection screens, thus dimming the overall appearance of your projected content.
Again, contrast ratio is basically the difference between black and white. Any stray light that hits the projection screen turns the projectors’ sharp black to grey, thereby negatively impacting the contrast ratio. To determine the amount and source of stray light hitting the projection screen, simply turn on the projectors and all of the lights that are used during a service. Then position a piece of cardboard in front of the screen and see from which direction the shadows on the screen appear. It’s possible to dramatically improve the contrast of a displayed image simply by redirecting lights and controlling any other ambient light.
Another cost savings measure that will create a better display experience is to install new lamps in your projector. Have you checked how many hours are on your projector’s lamp(s) lately? Assuming you purchased a projector that outputs the appropriate lumens on the screen that is installed in your sanctuary, most projectors require a new lamp at the 1500 – 2000 hour point. If your church is using your projector 20 hours a week, that equates to about 1 ½ to 2 years worth of use. When a lamp has seen a large amount of operational hours, it’s most likely only outputting 50% of its original light. Additionally, if your projector is underpowered for the screen size in your sanctuary, you may need to change the lamp more often. The increased light output from a new lamp can rekindle the memories of when your projector was new.
Creating a better image on a diminished budget may also come from simply changing the content of your presentation. Using a brighter background or higher contrast background for your projected images will make the display easier to see and read. Legibility correlates directly with the previously discussed perceived brightness and contrast.
Another idea is to either paint the area around the screen a dark color or add a wide dark border around the screen. This gives your brain a dark reference point when looking at the black levels in your projected content. This small detail can help a viewer’s brain perceive more contrast and therefore more brightness and resolution.

Im looking 4 a projector that has good size, quality, & will last 4 a while, dont have 2 b the best projector.
The projector dose not need to be the most expensive, or the newest and the badest just a projector that has a big projection, quality, and will last for a while with a decent price also. What specs should I look for.
Start here with the first link to learn about projectors, their features and prices. Then check the second link to read the reviews to help you decide. I own the Panasonic AE900-U and I love it. Movies in HD look great, sports in HD also look great. Many factors come into play when choosing a projector, so take your time. Good luck.
